miss fuzzy focus

An idea for a lesson on FOCUS. Now all this stuff is good for any toad even if they don't take a dance class and even if you're not a dance teacher. You can do it, too.

Take a fuzzy ball, give it a name and get the toads to keep there eye on it. Miss Fuzzy Focus (or whatever you name it) can move fast and slow.

Make sure the toads don't loose track of where she goes.

The Fruit Tree: pick imaginary fruit from an imaginary tree, focus up and back down as you put the fruit in the imaginary basket, ask them what kind of fruit they are picking

Make a fruit soup potion: imagine you are cutting the all the different fruit you picked; peeling and dicing, stir your soup, taste it and now your ready for the next game...

HOCUS POCUS FOCUS!!!

I say "Hocus Pocus Focus...on the clock" (with smaller toads have them point and look) I do this with various objects in the room. Note that there might be two doors in the room so pick one to focus on.
Next I have toads will gallop, skip or some other form of movement to the object I say
"Hocus Pocus Focus and gallop on something green"..."Hocus Pocus Focus and skip to something square"...and so on and so on. (note: smaller toads will want to climb on the things rather than stand next to them...tell them not to.) {adapted from Anne Green Gilbert}

Troll under the bridge time: go across the balance beam and don't wake up the troll or get eaten by the swimming sharks Bring out Miss Fuzzy Focus and have her either "hold" the toads hand across the bridge for assistance or Miss Fuzzy Focus is very good at giving high fives for a successful walk across the bridge. (oh, and make sure they have airplane arms for good balance)

After the toads have mastered not getting eaten by sharks, have them walk across the beam but to focus on Miss Fuzzy Focus (stand at the end of the beam holding Miss Fuzzy Focus up so they aren't looking down at the beam)

Dance with Greg and Steve: Who remembers Greg and Steve? Well, I never listened to there music as a kid...I actaully didn't like it and thought "who would want to go to those silly concerts?" Those guys are weird." But their cd's from the 80's are beautiful as you become a teacher. And the kids actually seem to like it. Maybe I was weird.

So, Greg and Steve... their "Kids in Action" album #7 is a good one. They do the twist, the pony, the swim and the jerk and for this lesson I add different focuses to each dance move. "Everybody do the twist...look up now down" "Now do the pony...look side to side"
You get it.

Have fun focusing with your toads!

note: Miss...or Mr. if you'd like...Fuzzy Focus does not need a face, just tell them that she/he is so fuzzy that you can't find her/his face.

what's a toad?

toad (according to the dictionary): a tailless amphibian with a short stout body and short legs, typically having dry warty skin that can exude poison.

toad (according to my mother): me as a child

Therefore, to me all children are cute, funny little toads

welcome to a place where we dance with toads
(disclaimer: and since I have a toad of my own this site may or may not have frequent updates)
